WICHITA - Head Coach
Mark Potter and the Newman University men's basketball team has released its 2010-11 schedule. The Jets will start the season with a bang, opening with five-straight games away from Fugate Gymnasium against traditionally-tough opponents, before playing host to in-state power Fort Hays State in their home opener.
Potter's 2010-11 campaign begins with a trip to Bartlesville, Okla., for the first ever conference challenge tournament. Newman will face Lone Star Conference foes Southwestern Oklahoma State and West Texas A&M on Friday, Nov. 12, and Saturday, Nov. 13., respectively. Three days later, the Jets will travel to Pittsburg State for a 7:30 p.m. date with the Gorillas.
The road won't get any easier for the Jets after that, as Newman will make the first of five trips to Texas, this time heading to Stephenville for the Tarleton State Classic, where they will take the floor opposite Lone Star Conference powers Tarleton State and Angelo State.
Newman will play their first game inside Fugate Gymnasium on Nov. 23, when in-state rival and national power Fort Hays State comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. contest. From then, it's back on the road for a Nov. 27 trip to former Heartland Conference rival Lincoln, before coming home for four-straight home games against Bethel, Tabor, Manhattan Christian, and McPherson, respectively, to conclude the first semester.
The Jets open the 2011 portion of their schedule on Jan. 3, when they pay a visit to Wichita Falls, Texas, to take on Midwestern State, whose 2009-10 season ended at the NCAA Div. 2 Elite Eight. Newman's final non-conference contest is slated for Jan. 8 when the Jets travel to Fort Smith, Ark., to take on Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Heartland Conference play begins Jan. 13 in Laredo, Texas, against Texas A&M International. Newman's first Heartland Conference home game is slated for Jan. 20 when the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons visit Fugate Gymnasium.
