Newman Soccer to Host SCSA Night
Bookmark and Share
WICHITA - The Newman University soccer programs have partnered with the Sedgwick County Soccer Association, and will open their 2010 campaigns with SCSA Night at Wilkins Field. The two-day event will kick off Thursday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. as the Jets men's squad hosts Missouri-St. Louis, and will conclude Friday, Sept.3 at 7 p.m. when the Newman women's soccer team takes on Northwest Missouri State.

As part of the event, players from all SCSA teams will be admitted free if they are wearing their team jerseys. Admission for adults is $6, with students 18 years of age and younger admitted for $4.

The 2010 soccer campaigns show signs of promise for the Jets this season. In his 23rd season as head men's soccer coach, Cliff Brown has assembled a 25-man roster, including a class of 13 newcomers that may be Brown's most talented signing class since the Jets made the NCAA Div. II transition three years ago. They will take on a Missouri-St. Louis squad that finished 9-7-2 in the always-tough Great Lakes Valley Conference. Like the Jets, the Tritons will feature a young squad, with 15 newcomers on the 2010 roster. The Jets and Tritons will square off at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2.

The women's home opener on Friday night promises to be a hard-fought battle as well. Coming off a third-place Heartland Conference finish last season, 2009 Heartland Conference Coach of the Year Derek Nichols will field a 21-woman roster for his 2010 campaign, including nine newcomers as the Jets look to fill the void left by defending Heartland Conference champion Incarnate Word, who has defected from the conference to join the Lone Star Conference.

Ball boy and ball girl opportunities are also available for the 2010 Newman soccer season. If your youth team is interested in serving as ball boys for Newman men's soccer games, contact assistant coach Brian Cushing at brian@prosoccer.kscoxmail.com. Girls teams interested in serving as ball girls for Newman women's games should contact assistant coach Jennifer Ermey at ermeyj@newmanu.edu.
