EMPORIA, Kan.- The Newman baseball team will look to re-gain its early season momentum on Tuesday, when they travel to Emporia State for a mid-week contest. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Trusler Sports Complex.
Newman (17-13, 12-12 Heartland) has lost its past six games to Heartland Conference foes, St. Mary's and St. Edward's. Prior to the two series, the Jets had won eight out of their last 10 games.
Ruben Marrero (.344 avg) and Jerrod Flax (.320 avg) have paced the Newman offense this season. Flax batted .545 against St. Edward's this past weekend.
Tyler Hancock (.290 avg) is leading the Jets with three home runs on the season, and is tied for the team lead with 20 RBI's. As a team, Newman possesses a 4.52 ERA, and has struck out 160 opponents on the season.
Emporia State (19-8, 15-7 MIAA) enters Tuesday's contest winners of nine out of its last 11 games. The Hornets hitting .347 as a team, and are led by Beau Poston (.403 avg) and Eric Dawson (.402 avg). Emporia State has hit 24 home runs as a team, led by Joe Kornbrust's seven round trippers. As a team, the Hornets own a 4.51 ERA, chalking up 138 strikeouts.
