WACO, Texas – For the second straight year, the Newman athletic programs have been recognized for achieving the highest GPA among the Heartland Conference. Newman's programs combined for a 3.24 grade point average for the 2011-12 academic year. This is Newman's fifth title of six years.
The Newman men's teams maintained a 3.16 GPA, while the women's teams combined for an impressive 3.31 GPA.
Newman edged out St. Edward's 3.23 GPA and Dallas Baptist's 3.22 GPA.
"Overall, the Heartland Conference continues to have a very solid GPA for our student-athletes," Tony Stigliano, Heartland Conference Commissioner said. "The academic success of our student-athletes, with the ultimate goal of graduation, is the highest priority for our members. While we always work to improve our overall athletic performance, we are very pleased with the combined GPA of our student-athletes and member institutions."
Newman led the team titles in baseball, women's golf and soccer. The 2011-12 team winners are as followed:

-Softball: St. Edward's (3.25)
-Men's Basketball: Dallas Baptist (2.90)
-Women's Basketball: Oklahoma Panhandle State (3.44)
-Men's Cross Country: Texas-Permian Basin (3.07)
-Women's Cross Country: Dallas Baptist (3.45)
-Men's Golf: Dallas Baptist (3.47)
-Women's Golf: Newman (3.83)
-Men's Soccer: Newman (3.13)
-Women's Soccer: Dallas Baptist (3.33)
-Men's Tennis: St. Edward's (3.61)
-Women's Tennis: St. Edward's (3.57)
