The 2013 Hall of Fame inductees are Dan Friend, Catrina (Rogers) Wallace, Chris Clawson, Via Christi Health and the 2004 men's volleyball team.
Friend coached the women's team to 22-plus wins in each of his three seasons with the highlight being the 2003 season when the Jets went 32-8 overall and 14-2 in league play. On the men's side, he built a program that placed second in the NAIA National Tournament by its third season having two 20 plus win seasons in 2003 and 2004 and being nationally ranked in the top 10 all three seasons. He coached 20 All-conference, eight All-region, and two All-American players in his career at Newman University.
Clawson attended Kansas Newman College and left his mark on the baseball record book in his three seasons from 1982 through 1984. Clawson played for three-time Hall of Fame Coach Paul Sanagorski, and is already a member of the 2009 Hall of Fame class at Newman as a member of the 1983 baseball team that was inducted as district champions and Area III champions.
Wallace was a four-year student athlete coached by Sr. Diane Leary, and holds top records as an outside hitter and defender. She holds records in four categories: kills, kill percentage, ace serves and digs. She was also a top student, balancing her academics and athletics while majoring in nursing.
Via Christi has been a strong partner with Newman Athletic Training and the Athletic Department. Medical services began with two part-time trainers, and by 2004 Via Christi provided two full-time trainers dedicated to Newman, and began to have team physicians visit campus for weekly injury evaluations. Via Christi's Orthopedic Director, Kenneth Jansson, bas been one of the “Team Physicians” since the inception of the agreement, along with Medical Director, Mark Stovak, since the early 2000s.
The 2004 men's volleyball team played for the national championship in just its third year of existence with a 29-11 record. The Jets hosted the tournament and went in as the No. 5 seed, upsetting the No. 4 and No. 2 seed in pool play in exciting fashion, going five sets in each. The Jets then won a thriller in five sets in the semifinals against the defending National Champions the No. 3 seed. In the final, Newman played against the No. 1 seed, losing after a hard fought four sets. Tom Mendoza was named to the NAIA All-Tournament team.
