WICHITA – The Newman women's tennis team entered the South Central Regional Rankings for the first time all season. The Lady Jets rank No. 10 in a tie with Western New Mexico in the rankings announced April 24 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Kirstie Symon entered the singles ranking as the junior from Gold Coast, Australia ranks No. 20.
The Lady Jets finished the 2012-13 season with a 17-6 record, including a 10-1 start. After a loss to Central Oklahoma to start the spring season, NU rolled off seven-straight wins. The streak ended with back-to-back losses to Heartland Conference powers St. Edward's and St. Mary's. After those losses, the Lady Jets started another streak, winning five matches in a row. Newman's season ended in the Heartland Conference Tournament in a 5-1 loss to No. ninth-ranked Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Symon, who played No. 1 singles for the Lady Jets all season, comes in at No. 20 in the latest singles rankings. The junior, who garnered All-Heartland Conference this season, went 15-3 at No. 1 singles. She was also named the Heartland Conference Player of the Week during the 2012-13 season. On the season, Symon has beat five players ranked in the South Central or Central Region Rankings. She defeated No. 11 Alexandra Khadzhyan of St. Edward's 6-1, 6-0, and won against four ranked in the Central Region. Symon knocked off No. 4-ranked Camila Quesada of Northwest Missouri 7-5, 6-2, No. 8-ranked Ivana Belejova of Northeastern State 6-2, 6-0, No. 15 Sophie O'Neill of Washburn 6-1, 6-3 and No. 16 Petra Pesic of Central Oklahoma 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
