WICHITA – The Newman women's cross country team finished third in the Heartland Conference Championships on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Cessna Activity Field. Senior
Rubi Torres placed third and was named All-Heartland Conference for the fourth time in her four year career. Dallas Baptist won the team title.
Torres, who was the Heartland Conference Women's Runner of the Week six times this season, ran with the front back of Rebekah Hernandez of Texas A&M International and Anna Salazar of Dallas Baptist for much of the race. Hernandez pulled away late from the pack to win at 22:03. Salazar was 30 seconds behind in 22:36, and Torres finished at 22:43 in the 6k. Torres earned All-Heartland Conference for the fourth time in her career.
McKayla Crawford placed 20th for the Lady Jets with a time of 23:48.
Emily Terrell finished in 21st at 23:59. In 30
th place was
Jenny Boroughs in a time of 24:31 and
Levin Melly was the fifth runner for NU in 24:44. Kendra Cruse finished in 26:34.
DBU totaled a score of 40 to win the team title. In second was Rogers State with a score of 64, and NU was third with 110.
In fourth place was Texas-Permian Basin with 118, Texas A&M International was fifth at 120. UA Fort Smith finished sixth with 122, and Oklahoma Christian was seven with a score of 139. Lubbock Christian totaled a score of 184 for eighth place, and Oklahoma Panhandle State was ninth with 285.
The Lady Jets are back in action on Nov. 22 at the NCAA Regional in Denver, Colo.
