PLANO, Texas — Closing out their fall season at another tough tournament, the Newman men's and women's tennis teams saw nearly every competitor earn a victory and one win an individual title over the weekend at the Collin County CC Invitational.
Mariana Guvaria blitzed through the No. 6 singles bracket to earn a championship for the Jets, besting three Division II opponents along the way. Her semifinal and final both went three sets, as the sophomore topped Alejandra Sanchez 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 and Maria Vlaskina 6-2, 0-6, 13-11, both of Arkansas Tech.
Janneke de Rijk and Emily Wise also reached a final at No. 2 doubles, earning three comfortable wins to get there, although the final wasn't played due to weather. Niamh Packer charged back with three wins in the consolation bracket at No. 4 singles to win the back draw, winning 8-2, 8-0 and 8-2 in her three victories.
De Rijk and Wise, competing at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, both reached the semifinals, as did Tamar Tskhakaia and Guvaria at No. 3 doubles.
While the Jet me did not have a finalist, six of the nine singles players or doubles teams reached the semifinals, including Eduardo Santos and Alejandro Gonzalez at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Lucas Norbiato and Kevin Clack both also won a pair of matches to make the semis at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
Teams of Norbiato/Santos, and Crawford/Ajani King made it to the semifinals at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
The Jets now get nearly four months off until they pick up the spring portion of their schedule, beginning February 10 when they host Cowley County CC.
