THE COLONY, Texas — Getting all of its players within five shots of each other in the first round, the Newman men's golf team sits in ninth place after the first day of action at The Classic at The Tribute Monday.

Pontus Dahlstrom leads the way after firing a 2-over 74 in his first trip around The Tribute Golf Club, and the Jets combined to put up a 15-over 303 in the opening round. That puts Newman just two shots back of Texas-Permian Basin, and ahead of 10th-place Texas-Dallas by two strokes.

The event, hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce, wraps up with Tuesday's second and final round.
