Jets Drop OT Heartbreaker To West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas — Battling hard and holding on to a scoreless draw throughout regulation, the Newman men's soccer team fell 1-0 in overtime to West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

Despite being outshot throughout the game, the Jets (7-3-2, 4-2-2, 14 pts Heartland) headed to extra time against the Buffs (9-2-1, 6-1-1, 19 pts Heartland). With less than a minute to go in the first overtime session, WTAMU got a lucky bounce, seeing a shot skip off the crossbar and right to a waiting attacker, who popped home the game winner.

SCORING PLAYS

100'-WTAMU- Christian Suthers, unassisted. Suthers collected a rebound off the crossbar and put it in the net for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A foul-filled game started with nine restarts before the first shot. That came from West Texas, who hit the crossbar that put the second chance back at the net, but Blake Andrews came up with the save to keep it scoreless.

-Andrews stopped another shot in the first half and one more shot was blocked by the Jets' back line.

-It didn't take long for Newman to record its first shot of the second half, as Chibueze Nwagwu uncorked one in the 52nd that slid wide left. Gbonju Odukale followed in the 60th, and his shot forced a save out of the Buffs' keeper.

-Carlos Rubio Garcia looked to give the Jets the lead in the 77th minute, but his shot was also saved, and Andrews came up again to keep it scoreless on the last shot of regulation in the 81st.

-A shot by the Buffs in the 95th was blocked, as was Adam Sawyer's try in the 99th, a minute before WTAMU got the lone score of the game.

NOTES

-There were a combined 53 fouls called in the game, and 11 cards given.

-West Texas held a 21-4 advantage in shots. Andrews finished with five saves on the day.
