SEASIDE, Calif. — Slashing nine strokes off their team score from Day 1, the Newman women's golf team secured a seventh-place finish at the competitive Otter Invitational at the Bayonet-Black Horse Golf Club Tuesday.
Courtney Zietsman cut nine strokes herself to lead the Jets in the individual standings, firing a 2-over 74 Tuesday morning to finish at 13-over 157, which was good enough for a tie for 20th in the 96-player field. Alex Patton stayed steady, shooting a second straight 79 to finish one shot back in a tie for 24th with a two-round total of 14-over 158.
Emily Aird carded an 82 Tuesday to total a 16-over 160, good enough for a tie for 33rd, and Ximena Name cut two shots off her first-round score to tally a 79 Tuesday and also finish at 160. Imkeleen Meyer rounded out the Jet squad, cutting three strokes off her Monday score to put up an 8-over 80 and finish in a tie for 42nd with a 19-over 163.
Newman, which was tied for seventh after the first round, finished alone there after totaling a 24-over 312 Tuesday. That gave the Jets a final score of 633, which was just one shot ahead of eighth-place Lee and only one back of sixth-place Sonoma State. Tarleton State ran away with the team title, firing a 296 Tuesday to finish with a 609.
The Jets are back in action April 11-12 at the Doc Housewright Invitational, hosted by Tarleton State.
