AUSTIN, Texas — James Bolton fired the fifth-best round of the day in the first round and the Newman men's golf team tied for sixth place after the first day of the St. Edward's Invitational Monday.

Bolton carded a 2-under 68 in the first round of the day, and followed it up with a 72 to finish the first day alone in third place with an even-par 140 to lead the Jets after two trips around Onion Creek Country Club.

Pontus Dahlstrom put together rounds of 76 and 72 to finish in a tie for 29th at 8-over 148, while James Hornsby was one stroke back at 9-over 149 after rounds of 77 and 72 to finish the day at 39th. Alex Gorman and Lee Maddox were part of group tied for 60th at 13-over 153, with Gorman cutting nine strokes off his first round score to tally 81 and 72 on the day and Maddox putting together rounds of 75 and 78.

The Jets put up team scores of 296 and 288 to total 24-over 584 to draw even with Dallas Baptist in sixth place in the 15-team event. That puts them right in the middle of a tight pack of teams, with Midwestern State in fifth with a 583 and St. Mary's and Cameron tied for eighth at 585.

Newman finishes the event with the third and final round Tuesday.
