WICHITA – Newman Baseball defeated Central Christian College 13-3 in seven innings on Tuesday. The Jets returned to McCarthy Field after hitting the road for 2 games in Oklahoma and their second conference series of the season in Topeka at Washburn.
The Tigers went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, which was the only lead they would have for the remainder of the game. The Jets were quick to jump on the Tigers and make quick work on Tuesday.
The Jets started their scoring after Cullen Glosson grounded out to third base and brought Shawn Marquis home. Zach Stewart's single to center field brought 2 more runners home as the Jets took the lead at 3-2. Another single from Dalton Smith brought Stewart home, giving Newman a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
Following two scoreless innings, the Tigers would get a run back in the top of the fourth narrowing the lead down to 4-3.
The next four innings would be superb for Newman. Following Trevor Pacheco's single that brought Tyler Hamill home in the bottom of the fifth, the Jets would score 4 more runs in the sixth to extended the lead to 9-3. Jace Schnieder scored off a wild pitch and Dalton Smith hit a triple to bring Zack Stewart and Cullen Glosson home. Tyler Hamill notched his first hit of the season in today's game
Newman would add two more runs each in the sixth and seventh.
Andrew Hudson was given the start for his season debut in today's game. The freshman struck out 2 batters in 2 innings of work.
It was a day of firsts for the relievers as well. Brycen Schoenhofer recorded his first win of the season, pitching two innings and tallying 2 strikeouts. It was his first appearance of the season. Cooper Lovelace also made his first appearance of the season, striking out one batter in one inning. John Cashimere also made his first appearance of the season and struck out a batter in his. The Jets pitching staff was in control most of the way, and was topped off with three strikeouts from reliever Justin Durnil in one inning. He got the first two batters to strikeout on 3 pitches each before Central Christian's third batter of the inning foul tipped an 0-2 pitch to take away a possible immaculate inning.
Newman moves to 2-0 all time vs Central Christian.
The Jets will host Northwestern Oklahoma State tomorrow at 1 P.M. and play in their third conference series of the year, hosting Missouri Western beginning on Friday.
